The Body’s Story: What We Learn When We Really Listen

Chapter 39: More Than We Came For

How long do you think people have been gathering in places to exercise?

Longer than treadmills. Considerably longer.

More than 2,000 years ago, the ancient Greeks gathered in gymnasiums to train their bodies. But they also went there to talk, learn, exchange ideas, and spend time with other people.

Apparently, even then, a workout could turn into a conversation.

Modern health clubs began appearing in the 1800s. Since then, the equipment has changed, the clothing has certainly changed, and we’ve become much better at measuring nearly everything we do.

But the reasons people continue returning may not have changed as much as we think.

After learning that, the concept of a “third place” came to mind.

Home is considered our first place. Work is our second, even though work, responsibility, and purpose may look different for each of us. A third place is somewhere we choose to return to because being there adds something to our lives.

A health club brings together an interesting combination. We can be alone without being isolated. We can move at our own pace while surrounded by others doing the same. We can talk, listen, laugh, concentrate, be encouraged, or simply enjoy being somewhere with a little positive energy.

Some days, exercising may be all we want from it. We arrive, do what we came to do, and leave feeling better.

But on other days, we might find a little more than we came for.

It makes me wonder how often we choose a place for one reason, only to discover that what keeps us returning is something else.

Maybe a health club becoming our third place isn’t such a modern idea after all.

Maybe we’re simply rediscovering what people found there more than 2,000 years ago.
