The Body's Story - What We Learn When We Really Listen

Chapter 17: The Competition We Choose

It shows up quickly.
Sometimes before we even realize it.

Competition.

Sometimes it’s obvious.
A friend. A neighbor. Someone a few years younger…or older…who seems to be doing just a little better.

Sometimes it’s quieter.
Someone we don’t even know.
A post. A number. A pace. A result.

And before we even realize it…
we’re in a race.

One we never chose.

The interesting part isn’t that competition exists.
It always has.

The question is…
how often do we pause long enough to ask why we’re competing in the first place?

Because when we don’t, something subtle happens.

We begin measuring ourselves against standards that were never meant for us.
Timelines that aren’t ours.
Goals that don’t reflect what we actually need.

And our body knows it.

It feels the pressure.
The urgency.
The push to keep up…rather than the space to move forward.

But there’s another way to look at it.

A quieter one.

One that doesn’t rely on anyone else.

What if the only comparison that truly mattered…
was between who you are today and who you were yesterday?

Not in a demanding way.
Not in a critical way.

Just…an honest one.

Did you listen a little more?
Move a little better?
Rest when you needed to?
Show up in a way that felt more like you?

But even then…
there’s something else worth noticing.

If you were to compare those two versions of yourself,
today and yesterday

what would you actually look at?

What tells you you’re doing “better”?
Or not?

Is it how you feel when you wake up?
How easily you move?
How patient you are…with yourself, or with others?

Or is it something else entirely?

Most of us have markers.

We just don’t always choose them.

And when we don’t…
they tend to choose for us.

That kind of competition doesn’t rush you.

It steadies you.

Because now, the goal isn’t to win.
It’s to understand.

And over time…
that changes everything.

Because the more you understand your body,
the more you begin to trust it.

And when trust replaces comparison,
progress tends to follow in a way that actually lasts.

Maybe that’s the competition worth choosing.

The one no one else sees.

But your body feels…every step of the way.

And maybe…
it’s already showing you how to measure it.
