The Body's Story - What We Learn When We Really Listen

Chapter 16: A Small Thank You

Most of the time, we don’t think about it.

We get through the day.
We move from one thing to the next.
We handle what’s in front of us.

And then we move on.

But every once in a while-something small stands out.

You walk up a flight of stairs and realize it felt…a little easier.
You wake up and feel just a bit more rested than usual.
You finish the day with more energy than you expected.

Nothing dramatic.
Just…something slightly better.

And for a moment-you notice it.

Which is interesting.

Because most of the time, those moments are there…
we just don’t always see them.

And then there are other moments-different, but familiar.

When someone takes the time to say thank you.
Not quickly. Not out of habit.
But sincerely.

You can feel the difference.

It stays with you.
And without really thinking about it…
it often makes you want to do more of the things that made a difference.

And it’s not just the person receiving it.

There’s something about expressing that kind of appreciation-
or even doing something thoughtful for someone else,
whether they know it or not-that feels good.

Quietly. Naturally.

And it makes you wonder-

What happens when that same kind of acknowledgment is turned inward?

Not in a grand way.
Not forced.

Just noticing something your body did…
and appreciating it, even briefly.

There’s no way to measure it.
No clear line from cause to effect.

But it’s hard to ignore that what we notice…
tends to matter.

And what we appreciate…
has a way of showing up a little more often.

Maybe that’s part of the story.

Not just listening for what’s wrong…
but recognizing what’s going right.

Even in small ways.

Because sometimes, the most meaningful changes don’t come from pushing harder…

but from simply noticing-

and offering a small thank you.
